About The Lodge
Gibb’s Farm, a Ngorongoro guesthouse, is perfectly situated midway between Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. But it’s not just a happy geographical coincidence that makes this such a special place: it’s also a rustic home away from home offering travellers a very warm welcome, and a serene sanctuary for moments of respite.
There’s a nurturing quality to Gibb’s Farm, which should perhaps come as no surprise as it was founded as a coffee plantation and growth has always been a theme. Today, following a tasteful and sympathetic conversion, it’s an Ngorongoro guesthouse that’s not only right in the middle of East Africa’s most impressive wildlife-viewing destinations, but is also imbued with a sense of wellness.
Gibb’s Farm is a retreat in the best possible sense of the word. It can easily be added onto either end of a safari itinerary, or fitted somewhere in the middle.
Original architectural features and colourful artisanal decor are nods to the lodge’s past, while a further link is provided (via the kitchen) in the organic vegetable plot that provides many of the ingredients used.
With Gibb’s Farm being something of a fixture in this area, there are many stories about its past and the people who helped shape it. The lodge is also a part of the local community, and their stories add immeasurably to the mix. The Karutu area can be explored by bicycle or on foot, including visiting local villages for sincere, authentic cultural experiences.
It’s easy to feel a sense of belonging at Gibb’s Farm – a feeling that only increases with the indulgence of an in-room traditional Maasai healing ritual, or over a dinner largely created from ingredients growing just yards from where they’re being eaten. Then again, it may be an afternoon on a private verandah that confirms the feeling of homecoming.
